NOTES:
14 pots per row. 37 rows with SmartShield, 30 rows with Herbicide. Test groups have J&R Exotic Foliage standard soil mix. Half of the test groups fertilized at 50% rate and the other half at 100% rate. Test occurring in field growing conditions. Herbicide test groups received manufacture’s recommended rate of application. SmartShield test group has received no herbicide.

Monthly weed control assessment (12/14/2004) at J&R Exotic Nursery of SmartShield containers and Herbicide containers:
Total Hibiscus containers with SmartShields: 540 Total Hibiscus containers with SmartShields and visible weeds: 24 Total Hibiscus containers % with SmartShields and visible weeds: 4.4% Total Hibiscus containers with herbicide and no SmartShields: 440 Total Hibiscus containers with herbicide and no SmartShields and visible weeds: 403 Total Hibiscus containers % with herbicide and no SmartShields and visible weeds: 91.5% Hibiscus potted 9/16/2004 Of our 24 weeds, 11 were growing through the mat. Owner is extremely pleased with performance of the mats both from the weed control aspect and also from the benefit he is receiving in growth enhancement.

Notes: Entire field trial was weeded. It took 2 days to the worker to remove all weeds. No difficulties with the SmartShield group at all. From a total of 420 pots (30 rows) with herbicide, 159 of them had visible weeds. (37.9%) From a total of 518 pots (37 rows) using SmartShield, only 16 of them had visible weeds.
